2023 Harvest Report
The 2023 vintage in Western Australia produced some exceptional wines, with cool temperatures throughout the region allowing grapes to ripen slowly and evenly, resulting in wines with full developed flavours and excellent acidity in whites, as well as deep colour and complexity in red varieties.
MARGARET RIVER
The Margaret River region experienced a cool and dry season with excellent winter rains, which allowed for good yields and exceptional quality in both whites and reds. The whites in particular were outstanding with bright acidity and intense fruit flavours, earning a rating of 8.5/10. The reds were also impressive, with good structure and a rating of 8/10.
PEMBERTON
The Pemberton region experienced similar conditions to Margaret River, with excellent winter rains followed by extended periods of cool and dry weather. This allowed for grapes to ripen steadily and with excellent balance and depth, particularly in the standout Chardonnay. The whites earned a rating of 8.5/10 while the reds received a rating of 7.5/10.
FRANKLAND RIVER
In the Frankland River region, good winter rains and low to moderate crops resulted in slower ripening times, producing wines with spicy flavours in Shiraz and deep complex characters in Bordeaux varietals. The whites, particularly Riesling and Fiano, were of exceptional quality with a rating of 8/10. The reds, with a rating of 9/10, were a highlight of the vintage with excellent structure, depth and ageing potential.
Overall, the 2023 vintage in Western Australia produced some exceptional wines, with the cool and dry conditions leading to balanced and nuanced wines across the region.
