In 2013 and 2014, whilst attending residencies at the Venice rintmaking Studiowith artist and master printmaker, Gianfranco Gorini, the focus of my practiceshifted significantly towards reflecting the unique waters of the Venice lagoon. 

Set amongst the glass foundries on the island fringes of Murano, Gorini’s
studio offered a richly creative vantage point from which to navigate the city and as each day unfolded, I became increasingly captivated by the water. I began to observe the water intently and found that despite the architectural grandeur of the buildings resting precariously above the waterline, my gaze always returned to meet the water, to find ‘her’. 

It was during those moments of quiet observation, together in silent dialogue, that the Laguna Veneta became the focus and inspiration of my art practice; my companion, my teacher and an ever-evolving muse. To me, the lagoon
is a feminine being, alive with colour and the cycles and strength of nature
and the moon. She is the dynamic breath of the city, her tides connecting
civilisation with nature, holding worlds both above and below the waterline, weaving together land and sea.

Navigating the city with a deep sense of curiosity, I seek out places and moments where the elements, environment and light make subtle shifts and variations, revealing more of her many facets. 

Transposing my observations and sentiments onto paper, I once again feel the water’s innate capacity for constant evolution and, similar to finding magical forms in clouds, I see new forms quietly begin to emerge in the water. I find the patterned feathers of a peacock, a figure leaping into the blue, drifting colours and imaginary upside-down worlds, shimmering crowns formed from tiny
droplets and colours so luscious they appear edible.  I wonder about what
fleeting forms others might catch shimmering across the water’s surface.

With dedication and deep reverence for the Laguna Veneta, I seek to express the infinite ways in which she changes from moment to moment and how she moves in a constant tidal dance to meet, reflect and hold the world around her.
