The soils are Karri loams, which are deep, very well drained red soils with deposits of gravel – named after the ancient Karri trees which dominate the forests in the area.
All late ripening varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz have been removed from the vineyard as the season moves into winter patterns in mid to late March, therefore interfering with the ripening. Over the last ten years the vineyard has undergone some major changes with a real focus on white varieties. Recent plantings include Pinot Blanc, Arneis, Sauvignon Gris, Prosecco as well as new clones of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. The vineyard was planted in 1996, with new plantings continuing to the present day. A majority of the vines are reaching 20 years of age, which is particularly crucial for quality Chardonnay.
Region:
Pemberton sits between the Great Southern and Margaret River. It is relatively new as a wine region with the first trial vineyards planted in 1977 following recommendations from the renowned Dr. John Gladstone. Pemberton combines southern latitude with high altitude. Vineyards are at around 100-250 metres elevation and influenced by the Southern Ocean. Winters are cold and wet; summers typically dry and mild with temperatures ranging from 10 to 30 degrees Celsius, making an ideal rainfall pattern for viticulture. Pemberton is an ideal place for white varieties.
