Wine Industry Sustainability Report 2025
We’re proud to see Cherubino featured in the Wine Industry Sustainability Report 2025, released today by Wines of Western Australia.
Our vineyards in the Great Southern and Pemberton regions were highlighted as a case study for our water-focused soil management and climate neutrality certification.
Over the past seven years, we’ve moved away from synthetic inputs and adopted a system grounded in biological farming, inter-row cropping, and improved soil water retention - strengthening both vineyard health and long-term carbon storage.
“We weren’t chasing carbon credits or sustainability credentials - it was water, in particular the increasing water-holding capacity of our soils.” Larry Cherubino.
📊 Key outcomes:
• 84% increase in soil organic carbon (SOC)
• Annual sequestration rate: 29.1 tonnes per hectare
• Net GHG emissions transformed from 207 t CO₂e to –11,685 t CO₂e
• 10–20% yield improvement
• Nitrogen efficiency increased by 60%
• Climate neutral certification (ISO 14064-2)
“Virtually all we’re using is just a Southwest mix,” Larry explains. “Nothing special, just oats, rye, clovers - things that suit the region and germinate well. You don’t need fancy cultivars. My granddad was doing this 90 years ago. It’s the most basic of all principles.”
Looking ahead, Cherubino Wines aims to achieve comprehensive climate neutrality across all operations - extending carbon certification beyond vineyard land to encompass winery and property emissions.
“B Corp certification would be my ultimate goal within five years,” says Head of Brand Marketing Lucy Anderson. “It doesn’t just focus on environmental impact - but also social responsibility and governance.”
Thank you to Wines of WA for recognising the collaborative efforts across our industry - and to our vineyard and winery teams, whose work continues to prove that sustainability and quality can, and should, go hand in hand.
