2022 Halliday Wine Companion
Last night the 2022 Halliday Wine Companion Awards were announced where once again Cherubino received some great ratings.
In the major Best of the Best categories we had six wines featured - 2 x Cabernet's, 2 x Chardonnay's, a Riesling and a Rose.
19 out of the 32 wines reviewed received 94 points or above!
Best of the Best:
2018 Cherubino Budworth Cabernet Sauvignon - 98/100
Great colour, deep but vivid crimson/purple. Cedary French oak and blackcurrant fruit are joined at the hip by superb tannins that reflect the day-by-day assessment of the must during the latter weeks of maceration. The mouth-watering savoury aftertaste is the coup de grace for this great cabernet.
2018 Cherubino Frankland River Cabernet Sauvignon - 97/100
An iridescent ruby in the glass. Saturated in flavour and packed with fine, chalky tannins that provide substance and structure for the sweet fruit. There is so much going on here that 2nd and 3rd sips are needed. The tannins and the fruit are generous, chewy and expansive. This bottle could evaporate in a moment. A ruminating wine and a showpiece for Frankland River pedigree.
2019 Cherubino Dijon Chardonnay - 97/100
Fermented and matured for 10 months in new and 1yo French oak. The elegance and detail of the perfectly balanced mix of white peach, pink grapefruit and quality oak reflects the marriage of the Dijon clones and quality oak. The length and balance are immaculate.
2019 Cherubino Margaret River Chardonnay - 97/100
Rich and layered on the nose, with crushed nuts, salted peach and preserved lemon. Marzipan, nougat, nashi pear, brine and loads of creamy softness on the palate, no doubt thanks to partial mlf. Delicious. 'Oh yum' was muttered aloud while tasting this, not a common occurrence. Length of flavour shows this will continue to evolve gracefully for years.
2020 Cherubino Great Southern Riesling - 96/100
Equal thirds Frankland River, Porongurup and Mount Barker fruit. Piercing intensity on the palate which spears the tongue with acid, citrus fruit and blossom. It then glides over the rest of the mouth leaving bursts of flavour in its wake. Stopping short of fearsome (only just) this has latent power and structure to spare. It will evolve for decades in your cellar.
2020 Cherubino Margaret River Rose - 95/100
Grenache's salivating boiled lolly character wafts out of the glass. Generous, expansive fruit on the palate, yet it retains poise and restraint as it glides over the tongue. Good length of flavour means it finishes as it started, with elegance and supple fruit ... all in the pursuit of pleasure. After all – isn't that why we drink rosé?
